About the park
Know the
landscape.
Kidepo Valley National Park is a remote 1,442-square-kilometre wilderness in north-eastern Uganda, framed by the Kidepo and Narus valleys, seasonal rivers and the rugged mountains of Karamoja. It is one of Uganda’s most distinctive landscapes, where broad savannah plains meet a strong sense of isolation.
Wildlife
Look for lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, large buffalo herds, zebras, giraffes, Jackson’s hartebeest, eland, oribi, Grant’s gazelle, lesser kudu, dik-dik, ostrich, spotted and striped hyenas and jackals. The Narus Valley is especially useful for wildlife viewing when water is scarce. Southern white rhinos are currently part of a conservation reintroduction project, not an established viewing guarantee.
Things to do
Take game drives through Narus Valley and the broad Kidepo Valley, visit Kanangorok Hot Springs, hike selected mountain areas around Mount Morungole and the Lamoj Mountains, photograph the valleys and mountains, birdwatch for ostriches, raptors and Kori bustards, and arrange a respectful Karamojong community or manyatta experience.
Planning notes
The park is remote and transfers are long, so fly-in or extended road itineraries work best. A 4WD vehicle is recommended. Pack for heat, dust and limited services, and confirm road, flight and community arrangements before travel.
