About the park
Know the
landscape.
Lake Mburo National Park is a compact 370-square-kilometre wetland and acacia-savannah park in Kiruhura District, between Kampala and Uganda’s south-western parks. Its rolling grassland, papyrus swamps, rocky hills and lakeshore make it an intimate alternative to the country’s larger savannah parks.
Wildlife
Lake Mburo is especially known for zebra, impala, eland, giraffe, topi, Uganda kob, waterbuck, oribi, reedbuck, buffalo, warthog and bushbuck. Hippos and Nile crocodiles live around the water, while leopards and hyenas are present but less predictable. Uganda’s only population of impala is one of the park’s distinctive wildlife features.
Things to do
Explore by game drive, take a boat cruise for hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds and lakeshore wildlife, join an authorised guided walking safari, try a horseback safari where operating, birdwatch across papyrus and woodland habitats, and add an Ankole cultural experience focused on long-horned cattle and local life.
Planning notes
Lake Mburo is about 228 kilometres from Kampala and works well as a one- to three-day stop on the route to Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth. Choose the Sanga or Nshara gate according to your lodge and activities. Carry closed shoes, sun and rain protection, binoculars and water.
