About the park
Know the
landscape.
Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest national park, where the Victoria Nile crosses savannah, woodland, wetlands and riverine habitat before being forced through a narrow gorge. The wider conservation area also connects naturally with Budongo Forest.
Wildlife
Northern-sector drives may reveal elephants, Rothschild’s giraffes, buffaloes, Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, waterbuck, warthogs, oribi, lions and elusive leopards. The Nile supports hippos, Nile crocodiles and waterbirds; chimpanzee tracking belongs to the nearby Budongo forest landscape.
Things to do
Take a northern-bank game drive, launch cruise toward the base of the falls, visit or hike to the Top of the Falls, birdwatch, arrange Budongo chimpanzee tracking or pursue permitted Nile perch sport fishing. Add Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the Kampala route for rhino tracking.
Planning notes
The park is large, so lodge location and gate choice affect every drive. Allow at least two nights for a game drive and Nile cruise. Roads can be dusty in dry periods and muddy in rains; bring neutral clothing, sun protection, binoculars and sturdy shoes.
